Geometric Gradation Quilt

Last month, I was a guest blogger on  Alyce 's blog, at Blossom Heart Quilts .  I had fun sharing a bunch of projects to her readers.

I introduced my finished  Geometric Gradation Quilt on that post.     I wanted to show some more pictures of my finished quilt.

Size:   66 inches x 78  inches

 I was commissioned to make a Penn State University quilt for a young lady  in our church.

 I knew that Geta's pattern would be perfect to feature the PSU team fabrics, and would spotlight  the navy and white colors for Penn State.

This pattern has a lot of blocks, but don't let that intimidate you.  The  pattern is  easy to follow and so logical, with  many pictures and diagrams. Geta takes you through the process, step by step.     I love making projects designed by Geta!

I had some nice small pieces leftover, and decided to make a pillow to accompany the quilt, for an "extra." 

I used the scraps for a  12 " x 16 " pillow      Susie's Sunroom

   I used this really neat The Patchsmith pattern,  Ticker Tape Mug Rug,  for a way to layout  my scraps.  ( I had to give and take, as my scraps were not the correct sizes.)  I like how it turned out, and so did the Penn State gal.

Today, the third day of the blog hop, we will see the pillow that Geta,  quilting goddess and designer,  of Geta's Quilting Studio, has made !

Hi! My name is Geta and I love colors and sewing quilts and bags.

I was glad when Susie invited me to sew a pillow using her first pattern.
Susie is an extraordinary pattern tester. I know it because she tested many of my patterns. Her feedback is always very helpful. So I wasn't surprised when I read the pattern: lots of clear pictures and detailed instructions. 

And here are my pillows. Yes, I just had to make two.

This pattern is perfect for that treasured strip of fabric you have in your stash and don't have the heart to use it!!


I modified a little of the width of the center strip, only to be able to use the whole motif of this beautiful Jenean Morrison fabric.

For the two side panels I used solid fabric. Then I was happy quilting a grid with very closed lines.

I usually quilt with neutral colors but on this piece I chose to quilt in green.

The entire family loved the simple but textured look.

 And the "sister" pillow!

Great project for beginners or a fun break for advanced quilters! And definitely, a quick and easy gift to sew.

The outer fabrics are a "quilt sandwich", made with main  outer fabrics,  batting in the middle,  and a home decorator weight fabric  for the bottom layer.  ( The home dec fabric is not seen.   The quilt sandwich  provides sturdiness in the bag.  ) Then , I did some VERY basic free motion quilting...  around the design 'ferns' on the main fabric and rambling on the  dark, small flower fabric.  (I need to practice FMQ a lot more!)
I made the straps two-toned.  So fun!  (They are 28" long.)

Bonus: Geta's pattern is so unique... This bag can have many "looks!"   Geta provides superb instructions, diagrams and photos  that  also show how to create a Bon Voyage bag with a hexagon front!  These bags were made for Geta's sisters, who all traveled to Paris together .  Aren't they gorgeous with  hexagons and the exquisite quilting?!!

I began by placing a curling iron in the bottom...

On top of the curling iron,  I put a large beach towel...

Size:   Large (double zippered) pouch:   6 " wide at the bottom and 9 " wide at the top x 7 1/2 " tall  x 3 " deep
           Small (single zippered) pouch:  10 " wide x 5 1/2 " tall

Geta's directions are excellent....  a  tutorial style pattern,  with clear  directions and detailed pictures.

Pouch Adoration

I am Sooooo in love with this zippered  pouch....

I think, if you have been  reading some of my blogs for awhile, you might have noticed that I have a few "strong attachments " (ahem.....er...addictions) to pincushions, tote bags,  mug rugs, paper piecing, and pouches of all types.

Susie's addictions... so far!

To my delight, I  saw a  blog post , in 2013,  on  Geta's Quilting Studio, that really caught my attention.

This blog featured a pattern that Geta had been designing, for a zippered pouch.... with a divided ZIPPERED section in the middle! 

   'This is genious!'  I said to myself !!

I commented on these gorgeous pouches to Geta,   and  before I knew it, she asked me if I wanted to test her pattern for her!   YEE-EHHHH-SSSSSS, I sure did!!! (I was shouting at my computer screen as if she could hear me in Romania!)(Maybe she could...it was really loud!)

So, that very evening,  I dug around in my stash of fabric, to find which fabric I would use.  I saw a new charm pack, given to me by my daughter .  It is ~ Moda  Audra's Iris Garden.

I laid out  these beautiful 5 inch squares on my floor and put them into 3 color groups, of purples,  red and greens, and then  brown and golds.
I  found that I could combine 4 charms for the front, 4 charms for the back,  and then add some tonal blender to create the correct width .  Then I used  4 more charms total , for the inner zippered divider pocket ( which makes the inside pocket front and back), with a little lining fabric added to them to make them tall enough .     I also used some Pellon fusible fleece FF987 on the outer fabrics.
Oh, and the 2  (yes, there are TWO)  ZIPPERS!!  

I have a good supply of zippers, in lots of assorted colors at the 14 inch length.  I found  the perfect purple one for the purple fabric colorways.  (Squeal ) You can read about zippers while I settle myself down.... :)

( Want a great site to order zippers from?  Etsy Zip It  has great zippers, color selection and prices. I don't have any association with Zip It, but truly love getting them from this  Etsy store. Her service is exceptional, and you can get any assortment of colors that your little heart could desire!  And different sizes , too! Oops, have I gotten you squealing now, instead of letting me settle down?!)

I suggested the name of  Twice As Nice  double pouch ....   and Geta chose that name for this pouch pattern!

So, for one charm pack, and some lining and front/back tonal fabric, you can make three                         Twice As Nice double pouches!  

Geta also includes measurements for TWO more pouches, in smaller sizes, in her directions.  The pouch I made  (the large) is ~

• 8" wide at bottom
• 11'' wide at top
• 7'' tall; 3½'' deep

My mother saw this pouch... and took  it home with her! She loves purple and that purple zipper really  "got her" !

If you are anything like me, you will have found yourself making up multiples of these Twice As Nice double pouches before you know it!  I kept looking at the other 2 piles of my charm fabrics, and couldn't resist making them up.  They go really fast after you make the first pouch and know what to expect.

Next, I made a set using some Japanese print linen. It looks like patchwork, but is a single piece.

I simply love making this divided zippered  pouch, and can't wait to make some more! They make beautiful and useful gifts.
