Playing in the Snow!

It's Snowman Time!

Our winter has brought us a lot of snow already .  And a lot of really cold days and nights.  But I have found a way to "play in the snow" and not get  frozen!
The late morning temperature was 3.7 degrees F

I made the January project, a snowman mini wallhanging, from the  book,
" A Year of Paper Piecing"
12 Sensational Seasonal Designs   by Beverly A. Maxvill

Book available at

Sections  coming together on the paper pieced block

The block before adding embroidery and the sashing

I decided to use the black and white chunky checks as the sash.  (Faye Burges for Marcus Fabrics   from my stash.)

January's Snowman  mini wallhanging      design by Beverly A. Maxvill

Embroidery touches :  scarf fringe,  coal for eyes and mouth, Cardinal feet and eye

Musical note  fabric for the bird house

I added pockets in the corners , for hanging with a little dowel rod.  I pieced these pockets with scraps left from making the block.  I smile when I see these pieces- the  carrot nose piece and the grass!

Let it snow.... in my fabric stash!

Stay warm!

  1. Wow! Your paper piecing is amazing!!

  2. Wow! I love it! I like how you showed us what a difference the embroidery makes.

  3. Perfect fabric choices for every detail! I love this guy! That little bird has stolen my heart, too! That black-and-white print is such a great finish, too...did Whiskers influence you? Love it!

    1. Yes, I have Whiskers to thank for that fabric selection! She is a good assistant in the sewing room!

  4. He looks wonderful, Susie!! I love the scarf and the birdhouse and music-note-fabric birdhouse adds warmth to the whole piece.

  5. Susie that is darling! You are very neat at paper piecing, I haven't tried that technique yet, I don't think I have the patience for it.... maybe that'll be something I try this year! Happy New Year! LOve those hanging pockets!

  6. Your snowman is adorable! I am not a fan of paper piecing, but you are obviously an expert. Thank you for sharing!

  7. The snowman.....cute! I love snowmen. I don't do well with paper piecing but you obviously do. I like the border around the piece.

  8. I have that book! Your snowman is so cute...I love snowmen. I just haven't quilted one from the many patterns I have.

  9. Your snowman wallhanging is adorable - especially all the embellishing you did - that scarf fringe is great! I used to do a lot of paper piecing - it's a great way to get really accurate seams and fun detailed patterns!

Our weather last week was as cold as yours - and now it's raining here, lol. I think you're having rain now just like we are - it sure beats the cold and the ice :D

  10. That is so CUTE!!! It must have taken you ages to put together - so many little pieces. I love your fabric choices and the bird and birdhouse are adorable!!

  11. Here it is finished! Love it. My favourite part is the birdhouse: the fabrics are perfect!

  12. Oh wow, I love it. I want to get this book. Paper piecing is so much fun and it always looks so nice. Love the fabrics you chose. Happy Quilting.

  13. Oh, that is some tiny piecing! Well done. It looks fab!

  14. Hello Susie,
I want to welcome you on my blog! Thanks for commenting on my blogpost about the oven mitts!
It is nice to meet you!
I like this paper pieced snowmen, and the black and white border is a good addition to the block.
