Pouches To Go!

On The Go With Across The Pond Sew Along

See our past projects  {here}
Are you going on any trips this summer?  Maybe you'll find something for travel, or things "to go"  , that you 'd like to make!

Amanda, The Patchsmith, has made herself some beautiful  patchwork book carry covers!
Isn't this so pretty!!   You'll see another book cover idea, as well, over at The Patchsmith!
Her patchwork  and stitching are so delicate and lucious!

I love using pouches when I travel... "There is no such thing as having too many pouches!" (You can quote me on that!)   So I made  myself a Dumpling Pouch,  by Michelle Patterns.

Dumpling Pouch  by Michelle Patterns  -  free tutorial
I wanted it to coordinate with some other travel bags that I have made in the past.

Dumplings Zip Pouch Tutorial:   by Michelle Patterns  {here} - the easier pattern

Fabrics:   Dab Of Jazz    Maywood Studios  ( I had a lot of the Dab of Jazz line in my stash)
               White Brussels Linen

Thread:   Aurifill   Color Me Happy     the variegated light green
Zipper:   Apple Green        I get my zippers from Zip It!

Dimensions:  about 6 1/2 " wide  x 4 " high

Come to me,  my little dumpling!!

I used the  linen for two rows of squares in the middle. (They turn up in the bottom of the pouch.)

Oh, this  little pouch is super fun.  The only fiddly part was adding the binding in the lining for the ends of the zippers.    I took my time, and hand basted where Michelle suggests to hand baste.

The bottom- I love seeing quilting on linen... this is the  Aurifil " Color Me Happy"

Next, I made an Eye Mask.  I usually want to go to sleep, while my husband reads awhile longer.  I like using an eye mask.

Erin, of Dog Under My Desk,  wrote a great , and free,  tutorial for an eye mask-

Are you curious about the other items you have seen in the pictures?

The tall linen bag on the left is a tall zippered pouch, with handles and oodles of pockets inside. It is new  pouch that I created . I call it the "Linen To Go Pouch."    It has handy pockets on the front, as well as the inside.   ( If anyone is interested, I will try to make a pattern for it.  Let me know.)

Pockets:  4 outer  /   3 small ,   1 medium,  and 1 large pocket inside

Lots of pockets inside. Yoo-hoo! The Dumpling is down in there!

The small duffle bag on the right is a  design by Cindy Taylor Oates. It is about 15 1/2 " across by 12 inches tall.  I made this bag a few years ago.

I also made some bigger travel bags, in the Dab of Jazz fabrics, and will share them with you sometime soon.

What will you be taking along on your next trip?

Another Two Zip Hipster

Customizing a Two Zip Hipster bag

I love making bags for my daughter.   She usually looks through my fabric and picks out fabric that she wants me to use for the project.   A few years ago, I made up my own messenger bag pattern for her .  She wanted a large size, and an over-the-body strap.     Here are the two bags I made for her:

Chrissy's Messenger bag   in Sherbit Pip fabrics!

The last time she was home, she  found some cute fabric, in my stash, and asked me to maker her another messenger bag.... and I suggested a few new features .  The  fabric is really fun... Type Fabric  by Julia Rothman Windham Fabric

After I studied my own pattern,  I realized that I  could use a great pattern that I already used  ,  the Two Zip Hipster, by Erin Erickson ( at Dog Under My Desk).  (Excellent directions and pictures!!)

Some of you may remember that I made a  bag for my tablet, on an earlier blog. I knew I could simply modify it for the specific features my daughter wanted.  ( I found the Two Zip Hipster pattern long  after I made the two messenger bags for her.)

A tote for my tablet          Two Zip Hipster    made by Susie's Sunroom

So what I basically did, to make this Two Zip Hipster into a  custom Messenger bag:
  • Added an outer front flap with a magnetic snap
  • Enlarged bag dimensions-  2 inches taller,  2 inches wider and 2 inches deeper
  • Inside pockets-   2 - 6 inches wide x 7 inches tall pockets Plus a zipped lining pocket
  • Strap-   44 inches long x 1 1/2 inches wide
  • Place the outer zip pocket and slip pocket on the Back of Chrissy's bag {featured on the front of Erin's Two Zip Hipster bags}  (see above)

Had to show you the cute lining in the  outer slip pocket on the back, too!

My daughter is getting her PhD in Linguistics... isn't this fabric so appropriate?!

September 's Across The Pond Sew Along Project

Key-Ring Pouches Projects

The arrival of the month of September brings us the beginnings of a new school year, cooler evenings, shorter daylight hours, the changing of the color of the leaves,....
and a new  Across The Pond Sew Along Project to work on!

Amanda, The Patchsmith, has chosen the theme of Key-Ring pouches for this month!
How fun is that?!!
She has found some truly adorable patterns for us to make!

Isn't Amanda's pouch cute in this fun fabric?

And then she made another style of pouch, perfect to  attach your key to, with room for a license and credit card.....

I actually  made the Round Earbud pouch earlier this year.... to go with my pouch set.

Susie's     circle  earbud pouch
Erin's pattern for the circle zippered pouch is really easy to follow, for anyone that is new to putting in a zipper.  Her tutorials are excellent!

Amy, of Amy Made That!  blog, found some other adorable zippered pouch patterns.
I fell in love with the Ruffle Zip Pouch tutorial she found, at  See Kate Sew.

Ruffle zip pouches     by See Kate Sew

I went to look over the tutorial at See Kate Sew,  and then I decided to make this ruffle zip pouch for my September project.
After I got the fabric and zipper picked out , I remembered that I recently got a ruffler foot for my Viking Topaz 30 machine (from my husband for our anniversary!)  I went online to look for any directions /tips on how to use the foot.  I found a u-tube video right away , that was helpful.

My Viking Gathering Foot
I changed the stitch size from 4 (far left) to 6 (on the right)
This was not a big enough a ruffle yet, so I looked up how to change my tension on the machine.  I changed it from the default tension number to a 7.

You can see the fabric begin to curl and ruffle up!
It's beginning to gather up
Now , we're goin' to town with some ruffling!
The ruffle is attached to the front.  This is the  front and back
Ruffle zipper pouch    by Susie's Sunroom
It is so cute, measuring in at 4 in by 4 in !

Just the right size for a few cards, and a key attached outside to a tiny D ring, that I added (on a loop)  before sewing up the outsides
I'd love to see any key-ring pouches that you make.  You can hook them up to our Across The Pond Sew Along Flickr group to share with everyone.  Lattegirl40 has added a totally cute  small wallet key-ring pouch already!

And , don't forget to leave a comment on my blog,  if you'd like to be entered for the giveway of the fabulous  Bookbag Backpack Pattern....  by  designer Samantha ,  At Home With Mrs H !  The deadline is Wednesday, Sept 4, at 10:00 pm EST.  (click here )
