Finished Ribbons Quilt

Sherbet and Creams Quilt Along Quilt

It seems like just yesterday that I jumped in with Joanna Figueroa in the  Sherbet & Creams Quilt Along  { at Fig Tree Quilts .}  It was April when I picked out these fabrics from my stash, to match, as closely as possible , to the  Fig Tree's Sherbet and Low Volume Bundles.

My pile of Sherbets:
I pulled these solid "Sherbet" fabrics from my stash

My pile of Low Volumes:
These are all gorgeous Fig Tree fabrics, except for the first and second fabrics
on the left

I didn't know what we were making, but was ready to make anything coming from Joanna!
This is what Joanna made... a Ribbons Quilt!  (here)  We didn't see the final quilt details until the 5th week of sewing!

I made a few changes from Joanna's quilt:

Since my low volume fabrics did not have any black or gray colors in them, I did not use black fabric circles and squares for the centers of the 4- Blocks.  I had a  lot of Millhouse Inn yardage, and found that it was perfect color for the centers.

I got "sew" excited at this step....

Aplique's sewn onto each 4-block

My little helper and I got busy laying out the 4 patch blocks ....

Whiskers helped me layout the blocks

I sewed  four 4 -blocks together to make the 12 1/2 unfinished blocks ....   and then I re-read Joanna's directions.  I should have added squares on some blocks , at the corner, before I sewed them together!  Oops!!

I thought about it , and realized that I could add the squares, if they were treated with the Crafted Applique' technique !  { See my post about the "Crafted Applique'.... New Possibilities" book  {here}  } Ta Da!  The little 2 inch squares  won't fray, and will be easy to sew on at  all of those intersections!

I also  added half squares at the edges. Next it was time to sew  a 1 1/2 " cream border on all sides, and then the 6 1/2 " wide Millhouse Inn fabric border.

Here is my flimsy top-

And here is my completed Ribbons- Sherbet and Creams Quilt:

Ribbons     by Susie's Sunroom

Quilt Details:

Pattern:  Ribbons    by Joanna Figueroa at Fig Tree Quilts , in Sherbet and Creams Book
Size:   62 "  x 74 "
Fabrics:  various Fig Tree & Co.  fabrics  ( Millhouse Inn, Dots, Buttercup )
Batting:  Warm and Natural cotton
Thread:  Aurifil  50 weight #2024  for piecing and machine quilting
Applique' :  Starch Applique for the pumpkin seeds, and Crafted Applique' for the red squares
Quilting:   Walking Foot -  serpentine "s" stitch -  plus - hand  quilting  stitches of 2 " squares in the scrappy 4-patch areas with   Gutermann thread

Hand quilted stitches  - 2 inch squares

I had a large piece of the green Millhouse Inn fabric, which I pieced with some cream tonal fabric, for the back of the quilt. It matches the green sherbet pumpkin seeds on the front.

The back of the quilt is green and cream!

This is a close up of the back... you can see a hand quilted square.

The back of the quilt.  See the little square?

You can see the serpentine "s" stitch quilting

I love the crinkling.... and it isn't even washed yet!  I also love the extra texture that the hand quilting has added!

This was such a fun quilt along!  Thank you, Joanna!

I'm off to my sewing room!

Sew Along Sewing in May

I love participating in Sew Alongs.

This month, I continued to work on my Crossroads Quilt and my Sherbet and Creams Quilt.
Both of these quilts are designed by  the talented Joanna Figueroa, from Fig Tree Quilts! (It's no secret that I love using Fig Tree & Company fabrics and patterns!!)

The Crossroads Quilt:

This quilt is a collaboration between Kimberly,  of The Fat Quarter Shop, and Joanna, and it benefits the March of Dimes.

The Crossroads Quilt was designed to showcase the Strawberry Fields Revisited fabric line by Fig Tree.   Since I have a LOT of Fig Tree fabrics in my stash, I am using various fabrics from different Fig Tree fabric lines:   Millhouse Inn,  Buttercup, Strawberry Fields
I think I will love the "scrappy Figgy" look!
(Ok, I have to confess.... I did buy some yardage of the Strawberry Fields Revisited, too. That gorgeous yellow with the small red flowers and dots you'll see in the second Diamond block.)

House Block:

* Note:  The Green house doesn't have a crooked chimney!  It just needs pressed!!  LOL

Stay tuned for more!!

The Sherbet and Creams Quilt Along Quilt:  at Fig Tree Quilts Blog

Joanna started this Quilt Along in posts on her blog. She had me hooked at "low volume!"
I was all set to buy a bundle of their low volume fabrics, until I discovered that I had enough  more than enough Fig Tree low volumes in my stash already!   BIG SHOCK!   Not!!
Remember these?

My selection of low volumes

And these...

80 Pumpkin Seed applique' pieces in Sherbets

The latest step was to sew each  pumpkin seed to a 4 patch block.  I enjoyed this easy sewing.   I had my walking foot on the machine, and decided to use it . I just sewed a straight stitch along the outer edge of each pumpkin seed.   I found matched colors of thread from my Madeira (rayon) embroidery thread set.

Joanna will be busy at Quilt Market for awhile now.  So I will have some extra time to pet and admire my piles of low volume blocks!!

Do you have a fun quilt along you are sewing in now?

I'm off to my sewing room!

"Hello there!" Hello Darling fabrics!!   By  Moda 's Bonnie and Camille

I fell in love with this Hello Darling fabric... by Bonnie and Camille.  These  strawberries hooked  me at my first look!

***********************************************************************

I've been busy making some  small  and scrappy projects, too.

Here's my  little  Pixie Basket...
a  fun, free tutorial by Heidy Staples at Fabric Mutt:

The Pixie Basket      design by Fabric Mutt

I have been hoarding away a stack of 5 inch charm squares forever.   I got them when I participated in a fun texty fabric Charm exchange.  Everyone sent in a different fabric for swapping , to get a wonderful selection of texty 5 inch squares!

A basket full of smiles!

And then I ran across this cute pattern for a Scrappy Pincushion:

I had fun making the pleats  in the linen gusset.

Petite Fleurs Quilt

Petite Fleurs Quilt- "Millhouse Inn "

Petite Fleurs Quilt   by Susie's Sunroom
Was it cold outside recently?  I must have missed it , while sewing away in my sunroom,  working  on my Petite Fleurs quilt!!

Here are the quilt stats:

Pattern:    Petite Fleurs     by Fig Tree & Co   Joanna Figueroa   available here
Fabrics:    Millhouse Inn   Fig Tree & Company  by Moda  (2008)  - in my stash!
Size:    -   65" x 74"   after washing
Batting:   Warm and Natural 100% cotton
Thread:   Aurifil  #2024  50 weight
Quilting:   the "S" serpentine stitch on my Viking Topaz  and a rose leaf motif on the border (fmq)

The back of the quilt   - featuring the currant colorway

What's a currant ? In case you were wondering....

Currants
I pieced the backing.... featuring the Fig Tree currant colors

It was a fun journey making this quilt!  I love Joanna Figueroa's strip method of putting the blocks together.   I fell in love with each little block!

I used two different "clotted cream" background fabrics
And, I couldn't help but get out my vintage Nancy Drew "The Moss Covered Mansion" book....    these fabrics just belong in an old inn....

My mother's Nancy Drew book.... The Moss Covered Mansion

Petite Fleurs Quilt.... in Millhouse Inn fabrics   by Susie's Sunroom

I decided to be brave, and try some free motion quilting on the borders.
I made up a simple rose leaf motif (of three leaves), and marked them with a washable magic marker to show me where to quilt.  (It did make some crinkles, so I was happy.)

One thing that never stresses me while quilting, is using the beautiful Aurifil thread!!

Close up of the "S" serpintine quilting  ( as seen from the back of quilt)

I think my Millhouse Inn Petite Fleurs quilt
gets the seal of approval from Whiskers

While sewing my binding on , I realized that the blocks made from the darker colors create round shapes!  This month's challenge, at the  Le Challenge blog, is ROUND !  I have submitted it for this month's challenge.   You can see the other beautiful  entries for this  challenge HERE.
