Farmer's Wife Blocks

Friday Block Talk
It's been awhile since I sat down to make a few Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt blocks.  I really enjoyed making these!  I had fun looking through my laundry basket of Denyse Schmidt fabrics to pick the fabrics.

Block # 27:  Darting Birds

#27   Darting Birds       Susie's Sunroom
Block # 28:   Duck and Ducklings

#28  Duck and Ducklings    Susie's Sunroom

Block # 29:  Economy

#29  Economy     Susie's Sunroom
I really like this Economy block!  I can see making a quilt with this block , where I want to feature some cute fabrics in the center.

Block # 30 :  End of Day

You can see all of my completed Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt blocks :

and

Here   in my FWSQ  Flickr Group

I think I'll be adding to my pile of FWSQ blocks this summer.  They are very relaxing for me to make ( by paper pieced foundation!)

What do you like to sew, that is relaxing?
I'm off to my sewing room!

Back to Farming

Back to Farming...

...Farmers Wife Sampler Quilt Blocks , that is !
It is exciting and inspiring to see quilters starting up new quilt block projects for the new year.  I wish I could do more of them, don't you?

Just a  few of my  current Sewing Enablers:

Amanda, The Patchsmith-   with her newest addiction project

                                       Block-A-Day With The Patchsmith

BAD Block #1  by Amanda, The Patchsmith, in her  Block-A-Day

Amanda is making a block a day, to use up her scrap pile.  It just makes me want to make every block that she is making!  And, then there are all of her delightful mug rug patterns...just begging to be made!  Oh, she is a 'bad' influence on me, for sure!

Julie C,  The Crafty Quilter-  with  her   Sew Thankful Sunday feature ( first Sunday of the month ) pointing out all kinds of projects  from all over ...  and with  her tutorials and projects...

I am loving mini's now....you know I couldn't pass on  making  this sweet wallhanging!
It measures about 14 inches by 14 inches.

I have been seeing so many  fantastic new Sew Alongs and BoMs and resolutions, to simplify and get organized.  So I spent a day away from the sewing machine  (sigh) ,         and filed away  all of the paper I have  been accumulating  (patterns, tutorials and  ideas for the future. ) As I was  picking up ( or "redding up" as we say in my family) my sewing room,   noticed tripped on  my pile of  Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt  (FWSQ) fabrics .   I  suddenly realized that my pile of  FWSQ blocks  were not "growing by themselves" while sitting there!

Blocks from the Book

 So, 2015.... here I come!

FWSQ Block # 25:    Cups & Saucers

  - note - I bought the book and  use paper pieced patterns (from a Yahoo FWSQ  group)

I love the bright colors in these two blocks.   Orange and turquoise are fun together!

If you are like me, and have any  Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt blocks started, I invite you to  make a few , as you can, along with me this year.

Add your blocks to my Share Your FWSQ Blocks Group on Flickr.

I fell in love with this sweet little block!  And , I had to mark a "  LOVE!"  in the book on this page!

Then, since I loved this fabric combination so much, I used them again on block #24.

New FWSQ Blocks and a Swap at Amy Made That!

FWSQ Blocks   .... and a Swap At Amy Made That!

I am having fun adding to my Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt block pile.... slowly but surely.

You can see the blocks in more detail... all together  Here
The first new block:   #21  Contrary Wife

FWSQ Block    #21  Contrary Wife       by Susie's Sunroom
This was an easy block to make.  I feel like this is another "classic " block  from the book,   that I finally got to make!

And I liked the color combination so well, that I used the same fabrics for block #22...

Block #22 Corn & Beans:

FWSQ block #22  Corn & Beans    by Susie's Sunroom
I was happy with all of the little triangles,  using the paper pieced pattern.  I did have to make two copies of the pattern,  and use  various pieces of both papers to put it together in a way that I could envison.  (Maybe my brain doesn't work the same way as the pattern designer....when sewing  the pieces all together again!
It  surely would've been  "succotash" if I didn't do it my way!!

Corn and Beans Succotash
Ok,  you can stop groaning now.... I apologize for that one!  Back to the Farmer's Wife Quilt Sampler blocks....

The SWAP  ALERT:

And now,  in case you didn't know.... there is a really fun swap going on again at my sister's blog,  Amy Made That!     Guess what the swap item is this time?
Needle books !!       Here are the details from Amy :

Amy made this needle book.....  this tutorial at Nana Company
sign up at:
eamylove@aol.com

Amy's GUIDELINES:

1. Join the swap by May 31, 2014.
All you need to do is send an email to me at
eamylove@aol.com
with your mailing address.

2.  Let me know if you could do an international swap,
or if you prefer to stay within your own country.
You can also let me know if you have any preferences of colors
or styles you would like to receive from your partner.

3. I will assign you a partner. My target date is June 7, 2014.
You will receive an email from me, near that date.

4. It's up to you, whether you would like to keep your identity
from your partner, or would like to contact her to get to know her tastes.
Either way is fun!

5. Create a needle book for your partner and mail it out
by June 30, 2014.

6.  Feel free to include any extras your partner might enjoy...
sweets, sewing notions, fabric scraps or another handmade item.

7.  Have some fun posting pictures on your blog or on Flickr.
You can give sneak peeks or just go ahead and show it all.
It's fun to get inspiration from others.

8. Reach out to me, via email, if you have any issues.
Things happen...and sometimes we need a little support
or just can't meet the target date.
I can contact your partner to let them know to be patient...
something good is about to happen.

9. If you need to bow out gracefully, that's okay, too.
No stress permitted in this swap!

10. Above all, encourage one another.
Make new friends with your fellow swappers,
visit their blogs, comment on their photos, and enjoy the group.

So, now...we need a little information...
just what are we swapping???

A needle book is basically just
a pretty little sewing booklet
with pages of fabric or felt,
for keeping pins and needles safe and handy.

I had so much fun making this same  needle book, as an extra goody gift, in the  swap,
The Skinny Pincushion Swap, this past March .  (It was the first swap that Amy hosted. ) I believe that over 50 quilters swapped the skinny pinnies!

These are so dear,  and can be customized in a million different ways.   Look what I did for the back of this one....

Skinny Pincushion   and  a coordinating needle book
So, if you'd like to make a new quilty friend or two,   maybe even  from another country,  hurry and sign up before  May 31 !  That's this Saturday!   It is sew fun to make something for a new friend, and then to get a nice surprise for yourself in the mail!  These really do not take a long time to make, so it is a fun summertime project to make.

Speaking of swaps....that reminds me....very soon,  I'll be sharing about the most recent swap that I have been in.   It is called , The Springtime Flowers Mug Rug Swap.... hosted by Michele at Quilting Gallery, with the mug rugs designed by Amanda,  The Patchsmith!    I am just waiting (eagerly) for my partner to send me my package, and then I will post about this swap!

Won't you join in with us, and be in the  "Need A Little Needle Book Swap"  ?!

Farmer's Wife Blocks

Loving these Farmer's Wife Sampler Blocks

I've  just completed two more Farmer's Wife Sampler Blocks....
Making blocks from the book...
in no hurry

Block # 19 :  Checkerboard -

FWSQ block #19   Checkerboard       Susie's Sunroom

I love how this block turned out!!   I really enjoy piecing them by the foundation paper pieced method!

Block # 20:  Churn Dash -

FWSQ block #20  Churn Dash     Susie's Sunroom

These have been my favorite blocks so far.   And this was the first time I made a Churn Dash block.... so I feel like I have passed a little "classic quilting" landmark , having finally made a churn dash.  I am using various DS Quilts fabrics  (Denyse Schmidt fabrics predominantly), with some other stash fabrics.  The blue is Quilter's Linen (Robert Kaufman.)  I just LOVE any color of the Quilter's Linen!

#19 Checkerboard on top of pile of FWSQ blocks                         Susie's Sunroom

If you want to see other FWSQ blocks,  hop on over to my Flickr group to see what we are all making!  I may be going at a snail's pace, but it is a lot of fun so far!

Yay, Churn Dash!!
Is anybody else making any big project , with a lot of pieces, but you don't have a  deadline to finish it?                    Enjoy the journey!
I'm off to my sewing room!

March Block Talk

March Block

Even though we had another batch of snow yesterday, I can just feel the earth "waking up"  slowly, getting ready for spring to take over.
I needed  to feel some "spring" inside, so I made that cute Shamrock Coaster,  that Amanda, The Patchsmith, designed for March!  This is a FREE pattern!!

My Shamrock Coaster
I am amazed at how Amanda can think "shamrock", and then use blocks and flying geese to create a shamrock block!!

I used scraps for the back of the coaster  and the binding

I sewed the binding by machine, and took time to iron all of  it carefully

A 2014 Across The Pond Sew Along (Shamrock Coaster)  and a 2013 ATPSA project  (Bird pincushion)

Now, I'll share the latest Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt Blocks that I have made....

Block # 13  Buckwheat:

FWSQ Block #13  Buckwheat   by Susie's Sunroom

I made this Buckwheat block using the paper pieced pattern, and just love it!
These are going to make my quilt look more scrappy, as they are introducing some new colors... citron and a different shade of blue, in some  DS Quilts fabric by Denyse Schmidt.

Block # 14:  Butterfly at the Crossroads

Block #15 :  Buzzard's Roost

I really like how the solid dark colors look in these blocks.

Here are the blocks laying out:

March completed blocks

I do enjoy making these blocks, in between other projects.

Elaine,  The Summercrafter, is making the FWSQ in her weekly series Friday Night Block Party.   You can see a  whole bunch of  FWSQ blocks in my Flickr group here.

Before I say goodbye,  I wanted to let you know there is a  Springtime Flowers Mug Rug Swap at Quilting Gallery !

Guess who designed the mug rugs for the swap?  Yes, our Amanda, The Patchsmith!  Look at these cute mug rugs!!  They just make me happy to see look at them!
This is a fun way to meet new friends from all over the world!  I am going to sign up!
