Barn blocks and more Farm Girl Vintage Blocks

Sewing up 2 blocks every week
 with Bee In My Bonnet on #FarmGirlFridays
I have so enjoyed making a few blocks per week, along with the sew along at Bee In My Bonnet's Farm Girl Fridays!  We use the book , Farm Girl Vintage , by Lori Holt.  I just love these patterns!!

Last week, we had a family reunion.  I was in the middle of making some of the barn blocks, and had an idea to make a pillow as a thank you gift  for my aunt and uncle.   ( My aunt and uncle live on a farm, and have hosted reunions for many years in the past.  We all watched our first Evening Primose open up to bloom, before our very eyes, at a reunion in the year 2000. Many of us now continue to grow these ugly weeds, that create a beautiful and delicate  yellow flower. The Evening Primrose has become the unofficial symbol of our reunion. )

Evening Primrose blossoms from my back yard... they only last one evening

This is the pillow that I put together with a barn block from the Farm Girl Vintage book:

I used some black denim for the back.  And the Covered Zipper back  ( using Amy Made That! 's  easy tutorial!  { Get the tutorial Here}

Isn't this a fun barn block?

I also made a second larger barn block...the Quilty Barn Block:

I like this red ticking fabric.  I tried to make it look like barn boards.  (It was a scrap that found a home with me!)    I looked around and found a paper pieced pattern  that looks like Evening Primrose.  { Claudia's Quilts blog- Flower Power block 3 )  And that's a   FGV Milking Day block beside it!   This will be made into a pillow for me!

I also made two pillows for another two special aunts, who have hosted past reunions, and arranged for the revival of the 2015 family reunion.  They live in historical towns, so I made them a tall house block to go along with their Evening Primrose blocks.

  4. Someone's been a busy beaver!
    I really like all the 30's prints you are using for your blocks, and the red ticking stripe was perfect for the barn pillow. Those old scraps really come in handy.

  5. Oh my goodness Susie! You have done an amazing job with your Farm Girl blocks and completed so many of them too! I love your fabric choices. The red ticking makes the perfect barn siding too. The pillows you made are darling and the way you incorporated the evening primrose is so sweet. It is magical to watch them bloom - like time lapse photography.

  6. Wow, Susie! So many beautiful finishes. Amazing work!! The pillows are fabulous and both pieced and appliqué primroses are so beautiful. How great it is that you have a family flower. The red ticking fabric was a great find, perfect for the barn boards.
